Edward's Story

Life After beginning to think I would never find my soulmate, I found her at the Macomb County Republican HQ on election night 1978. Our first date was on November 16, my birthday. By January 1979, we knew we wanted to get married. Our wedding was one year and a day after our first date, November 17, 1979. I always try to do something special for Kay on election day because I consider myself to be the luckiest guy on earth! Our only child, James Edward III, was born in 1983. He graduated from Grand Ledge High School in 2001 and Olivet College in 2005. He is a great kid and his mother and I consider ourselves very very lucky to have him. We are confident he will pick out a really nice nursing home for us! Like most people, I began college immediately after high school in September 1968. I finally graduated from college in 1983 with a Bachelor of Accountancy degree from Walsh College. I finished law school and passed the bar exam in 1989. I joined the Michigan Court of Appeals staff as a research attorney then as a law clerk. In 1991, Governor John Engler appointed me to the Workers' Compensation Appellate Commission where I served for 12 years. I am now semi-retired because of a disability (more on that later). A national publisher has me editing a monthly newsletter (Michigan Workers' Comp Reporter) on Michigan developments in workers' compensation. I also read bar exans twice a year and teach one class a term at Lansing's Cooley Law School. In August 2003, I was diagnosed with primary progressive MS -- so life is very challenging these days. ugh the workers' comp community so that even though I shaped workers' comp law as a commission member for 12 years, not a single workers' comp law firm would interview me. Today, 2007, I am wheelchair bound. I home care have aides to assist me in the morning and the evening. This is sure not how I expected to spend my golden years. I don't know what God's plan for me was when I contracted MS, but I fully intend to ask when I see Him!! In 2005, Kay and I moved to a manufactured housing community in Eagle, Michigan which is just outside of Lansing. The house is completely handicap accesible so it works much better for me and is a lot safer than our 1970s ranch in Grand Ledge. We are right off I-96 at exit 84, Eagle/Westphalia. We are less than a half mile from the expressway. If you ever find yourself on I-96 headed to or from Grand Rapids or other points in west Michigan, please stop in. We are a great rest stop -- we boast the cleanest bathrooms along I-96 -- and I'll even buy you a cup of coffee! I've been active in politics since 1968. In 1998, the Eaton County Republican Party honored me with the Frank D. Fitzgerald Lifetime Achievement Award. Fitz was Governor in the 1930s and was a proud son of Eaton County! In 1996, I was selected a Michigan delegate to the Republican National Convention in San Diego. This year (2007), I am working for Mitt Romney for President It is hard to believe it will be 40 years next year since we graduated from dear old Sacred Heart High School. I sure hope we'll have a reunion to mark this anniversary -- I would dearly love to see everyone!
